On this page, you will find information about the world of this roleplay, including how we handle jobs, money, classes, Quidditch teams/prefect spots, special abilities, and other things.
The Fates
'The Fates' is the name of an account controlled by the administrators of the board. Fate does things like moderate duels and Quidditch games and supply random encounters or decide the outcome of certain events. The Fates do not post in every topic, but if they post in your topic, you can't ignore the post. Unpredictability makes a roleplay more interesting.
If you get your character in a dangerous situation, such as dueling Voldemort or confronting a powerful creature, you may receive a message from The Fates letting you know your character is in danger of being killed. You have a chance to roleplay your way out of the situation. If you don't, your character may die. This is to prevent people from putting their characters in extreme circumstances without fear of the consequences.
If you are in combat with another character, or another situation you feel requires mediation, you can send a message to The Fates and request their involvement.
Jobs and Money
The money system is completely optional. If you don't want to, your character doesn't have to work, they don't have to have any money and it won't affect how you roleplay. However, special items and house forums are only attainable with money.
When your application is approved, you will have a topic posted for you in the Gringotts Vaults. In the interest of simplicity, the wizarding money system will break down in tens: there are ten knuts to every sickle, and ten sickles to every galleon. We will mostly be working with galleons.
In certain forums, you will find a pinned topic with a list of employees, as well as available positions, hiring criteria, and monthly wages. If you want an open job, message Headmistress Chant. Once you have that position, you are welcome to roleplay as an employee in any topic in that forum, but you are not obligated to.
On the first day of every month, your bank account will be automatically updated with your wages if you have any. If you want to spend your money on something, or if you get money from something, all you have to do is post in your thread in Gringotts letting us know what you bought and how much it was, or what you were paid and how much. A staff member will update your total.
If you play an adult character, you may apply to own an existing shop, or message Headmistress Chant about opening a shop of your own in Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley, or Knockturn Alley. Once you are the owner, you can write an inventory list (potentially including some special items), send it to Headmistress Chant to be approved, and then post it. 60% of every item you sell to another user will be applied to your bank account, but you still have to let us know in your Gringotts account.
To recap, all you really need to know is that you can ask for a job if you see it, and post to your Gringotts account when you gain or lose money.
Housing
If you have a job, you may be able to afford housing. If you don't have a job or don't buy a house, that doesn't mean you're homeless, it just means there is no forum to RP in for your house.
There are several forums around the site for homes in various income brackets, such as the High Street Lofts, Diagon Gardens, and Wintercrown Street. If you would like your character to live in one of these places, make sure their monthly salary is more than their rent and that they are over 18 years old. Then, mail Headmistress Chant and she will take care of everything.
You are allowed to share houses with other characters and split rent.
Classes
Classes are another feature of the board that are optional. If you play a student, you don't ever actually have to attend a single class and your character can progress through the years as normal...but where's the fun in that, right?
If you play a student, you can enroll in as many classes as you want by posting in the enrollment topic for each class, but you should probably update your profile with the classes you are taking so you don't forget.
Classes are held once a month. Grades are based on whatever the teacher wants them to be based on. Some teachers may occasionally assign homework.
The school year begins in September and ends in May. In May, Headmistress Chant will send you a report card and tell you if you passed or failed. If you passed, your character can move up to the next year in January. If not, they stay in the same year.
The rest of this section is intended for people who would like to play a professor. Professors have a little extra responsibility, but they help make the site more fun, and it pays pretty well: professors make 50 galleons a month.
If you would like to play a professor, you will have to keep track of who attends and who participates in your class. We will post and maintain an enrollment topic for you in your class forum, unless you'd like to post your own. Just specify in your application. If you want, you can post a topic in your class forum and keep it updated with your grades or other information you want your students to have.
As long as the school year is going, enrollment never closes and students should only be graded on class periods after the date of their enrollment.
You will post a class once a month, on whatever day you want, so you should have completed nine class periods by the end of May. If you can't make one, contact Headmistress Chant and she will find a substitute to teach your class for you.
Award points for attendance and participation. You can break this down however you like, and have as many possible points in your class as you want. You are also allowed to assign your students some homework and give points for that; homework can be something like a roleplay topic, such as practicing a method of divination on a friend, to a short essay on a favorite magical creature. Feel free to come up with your own ideas, too, and you can take some creative license when it comes to what you teach in your class since the books provide only so much information.
At the end of the year in May, send all your grades to Headmistress Chant and take a break until September.
Quidditch Teams
Only second years and up can play on a Quidditch team. Captains must be fifth year or above.
Prefects and Head Boys/Girl Positions
Prefects must be fifth years or above, and Head Boy and Head girl must be seventh years. Please make sure it's in your character's personality to hold a position like this; it may make them unpopular with other students as they have an obligation to uphold the rules.
Special Abilities
If you wish to apply as a special character, look at the list in the special abilities topic and make sure there is an open spot. Then make sure your application is in excellent shape and you can be active on the site. For characters like werewolves, you cannot bite a character without their permission. If someone would like to be turned into a werewolf by another character, message Headmistress Chant.
Animagus
If your canon character was an Animagus in the books, then they are an Animagus even if no open spaces are listed. If you have an original character, you can't join as an Animagus. You have to wait for an open spot, then complete the Animagus Challenge.
