Like every year for the past century or so, the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom was on the first floor, one staircase up from the main hall and down one corridor if entering from the courtyard where many students take their breaks. Windows line one wall, with iron bars on the top and bottom. They had once been broken during a Cornish Pixie skirmish, but the current glass still seemed aged and faintly yellow.
Tables were set up to accommodate two students apiece and lined up four across and five deep, allowing up to forty students per class. The first and second year class were often fuller than that, and so extra chairs lined the walls. Portable desks could be levitated into place and then stored in one of the two huge closets found in the classroom.
It was widely known that the DATDA's teacher rarely lasted more than a year. After all, the past four years had proven that theory. Professor Quirrel had been Lord Voldemort's minion; Lockhart was a foolhardy imposter; Professor Lupin, while able, had lupin issues. Alastor Moody? Also an imposter with daddy issues. Lovely history in Terrance's opinion, but also one he would have to swim through to organize useful classes.
When he exited his office, the tables were already filled with the students daring enough to continue DATDA studies. Most had passed their O.W.L.'s by various means of study and sheer luck. Frankly, Terrance had no intention of acknowledging those marks until he'd seen first hand how accomplished his fifth and sixth years were. Wearing deep blue robes and simple black attire beneath, his skin was pallid in the daylight streaming through the windows. His hair feathered to the left of his brow, revealing a small ruby piercing in his upper ear cartilage. "I'll assume, for the meantime, that everyone here has studied the lesser Dark creatures, various jinxes, counter-jinxes and charms..."
He paused on the last step above the ground floor, hand resting on the banister. He wore a number of rings, mostly silver plated, all heavy and ornate. If any of the students believed he was about to go up in flames, than the sunlight reflecting off his white skin was about to bust the muggle-made legends wide open. Scowling very faintly, he gave a long, unhappy sigh and moved to stand behind his desk at the front of the room. "On your desk I've supplied a copy of The Dark Arts Outsmarted, as well as Confronting the Faceless. The latter is N.E.W.T. level work, so no fifth year is expected to read it. The former is required to pass this class."
Tired blue-gray eyes sauntered from face to face, void of any set emotion. With his wand pulled from his pocket, he cast a Wingardium charm on three other books sitting on his desk. "Many of our classes will refer to these as well. There are copies available for use during class only, depending on the lesson. For those whom are unaware, I've designed this class for practical study. Sixth years, I do hope you're ready to perform under pressure."
Terrance, feeling the weight of many curious eyes, slowly smiled, revealing his white, square and very boring set of teeth. A few gasps, as he'd expected, and instantaneous whispering broke out. His smile faded and he idly lined the extra novels on his book in alphabetical order. Word had spread like wildfire of his admittance to Hogwarts and assumed post as DATDA's teacher. He'd already received three Howlers from concerned parents - whom he had gaily shared with Headmistress Chant in her office since that's where he'd been at the time.
"In one week's time, I will collect scrolls from each of you. I expect two feet of good, exploratory research. I want to know the extent of your studies over the past four years and, no, I will not accept a LIST of anything except spells and creatures you've dealt with personally. For now, all of you will read on the differences between the Flagrate spell and the Flagrante Curse."
Edit:
Assignments will be accounted for at the end of the month.
- can turn in via post.
Optional: a PM or post with a short description in student's strengths and weaknesses will sufficiently cover the mentioned assignment. Only requested to expand the class's depth.
- please feel free to PM ideas to Professor Kholling.
